Summer Box Office Struggles as The Garfield Movie Takes the Lead

The summer box office is experiencing lackluster performance, with this weekend continuing the trend of low earnings following last week’s record-low numbers. The Garfield Movie, an animated film from Sony, is expected to take the top spot in its second week, just barely surpassing Warner Bros.’ Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

The Garfield Movie, despite mostly negative reviews, is projected to have a modest drop in its second weekend, potentially reaching over $50 million by Sunday. Meanwhile, Furiosa, which had a disappointing Memorial Day debut, is expected to earn around $50 million domestically by Sunday. However, the film’s second weekend drop may reach a staggering 57%, making it one of the worst-performing sequels in recent years.

On a more positive note, John Krasinski’s PG-rated family-friendly film, IF, is performing exceptionally well and is expected to earn over $10 million this weekend. Its domestic earnings have already reached $80 million. In addition, 20th Century Studios’ Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is outpacing its predecessor, with projections estimating that it could earn $140 million domestically by Sunday.

Crunchyroll’s Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle and IFC’s horror movie In a Violent Nature are also expected to perform well. The latter could potentially challenge IFC’s top opener, Late Night with the Devil.

Despite the continued struggles of the summer box office, there are still some bright spots. The Garfield Movie is leading the pack, while IF, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle, and In a Violent Nature are all expected to do well. As the summer months continue, it remains to be seen whether the box office will rebound or continue its downward trend.
