The Rocky franchise, synonymous with Sylvester Stallone’s iconic character Rocky Balboa, has taken a significant departure with Creed III. For the first time, the story focuses solely on Adonis Creed, played by Michael B. Jordan, who makes his directorial debut in the film. The movie explores themes of family, identity, and nostalgia as Adonis faces off against his childhood friend Dame, played by Jonathan Majors.

The film begins with a nostalgic prologue, showcasing Adonis’ initial friendship with Dame and their shared passion for boxing. The early scenes seamlessly transport viewers back to the early 2000s, slowly building a connection with the characters. However, their lives take a dramatic turn, and Adonis’ decision to leave Dame behind weighs heavily on his shoulders.

Twenty years later, Adonis has become a successful boxer, married to Bianca Taylor, and father to their daughter Amara. Meanwhile, Dame is released from prison and seeks to rekindle his friendship with Adonis, who is initially hesitant but eventually agrees to help Dame realize his boxing dreams.

The story delves into the complexities of their relationship, exploring the gray areas between hero and villain. Majors brings depth and nuance to his character, making Dame both charming and heartbreaking. His performance elicits sympathy from the audience despite his flaws.

Jordan’s direction brings a fresh perspective to the franchise, blending traditional formulas with innovative storytelling and direction. The boxing scenes are particularly noteworthy, incorporating anime-inspired visual effects and innovative camera angles to create a unique viewing experience.

The climactic final fight is a stunning display of creativity, throwing traditional Rocky/Creed conventions out the window. Jordan’s bold decision to experiment with the fight’s presentation is a testament to his willingness to evolve the franchise and take risks.

Creed III is a triumph, honoring the past while forging a new path for the franchise. With outstanding performances, a charming storyline, and innovative direction, Jordan has successfully breathed new life into the Rocky/Creed universe. As Adonis finally sheds Rocky’s shadow, Creed III marks a new era for the franchise, offering a fresh and exciting look into the future.
