Yellowjackets’ Van Plunges into Dark Despondency

As the Yellowjackets TV series unfolds, Liv Hewson’s character Van has undergone a significant transformation. Initially, Van was the group’s ray of hope, buoyed by her quick wit, connection with Taissa, and faith in Lottie’s teachings. However, as the series progresses, Van’s optimism has waned, and her light has begun to fade. This downward spiral becomes even more pronounced in Episode 6, “Qui,” where Van’s desperation to cling to Lottie’s rituals reaches a fever pitch.

The loss of Shauna’s baby serves as a crushing blow to Van’s faith. Hewson notes that this devastating event left Van questioning her entire existence, wondering if she was merely surviving by chance, with no clear understanding of why she was still alive. This loss of faith marks a significant departure from Van’s earlier enthusiasm, and she begins to doubt whether there is any hope for survival. The tragedy has also taken a toll on Van’s relationships within the group, particularly her dynamic with Taissa, as Van struggles to find solace without a clear understanding of why she’s still alive.

Hewson believes that Van’s struggle to trust others is deeply rooted in her own self-doubt. According to Hewson, Van has always found it difficult to rely on others, and this fundamental distrust stems from a lack of trust in herself. For Van, trust is a hard-won and rare commodity, making it even more difficult for her to form meaningful connections with others. As the series progresses, it remains to be seen whether Van will find a way to reclaim her faith or succumb to the darkness that has begun to consume her.

Hewson’s portrayal of Van’s complex and tumultuous journey serves as a testament to the show’s ability to explore the intricacies of human nature. With each new episode, Yellowjackets continues to delve deeper into the psychological nuances of its characters, revealing the depths of their fears, hopes, and desires. As Van navigates the treacherous terrain of her own despair, the show expertly captures the fragile balance between hope and hopelessness, leaving viewers wondering what lies ahead for this complex and multifaceted character.
