The excitement is palpable as James Gunn and the DC team gear up for another major casting decision, this time for the iconic role of Supergirl. Deadline reports that screen tests for the role are about to commence, with Milly Alcock, Emilia Jones, and Meg Donnelly among the top contenders. While there’s always a chance that a major name could be approached directly, the current plan is to conduct a series of thorough screen tests in the coming month.
This casting won’t be for an immediate standalone Supergirl movie but rather for a cameo appearance, setting the stage for a potential future film. This approach mirrors how Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther were first introduced in Captain America: Civil War before leading their own successful franchises.
The planned Supergirl movie, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, was announced by Gunn and co-DC chief Peter Safran on January 31, 2023. Based on Tom King’s 2022 comic book series, the film will be written by Ana Nogueira, who impressed Gunn and Safran with her vision for the character while writing a screenplay for a different version of Supergirl, inspired by Sasha Calle’s portrayal in The Flash.
Gunn elaborated on the distinctive approach to Supergirl in their series:
“In our series, we see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore, she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”
Who Are the Supergirl Candidates?
Milly Alcock: An Australian actress best known for her portrayal of young Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s House of the Dragon. Alcock’s career also includes roles in TV shows and films like Upright, The Gloaming, and Reckoning.
Emilia Jones: An English actress and singer who gained widespread acclaim for her lead role as Ruby Rossi in the Academy Award-winning film CODA, earning her a BAFTA nomination for Best Actress. Jones also starred as Kinsey Locke in the Netflix series Locke and Key.
Meg Donnelly: No stranger to the DC universe, Donnelly has voiced Supergirl in the animated movies Legion of Superheroes and Justice League – Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part One. She’s best known for her role as Taylor Otto in ABC’s American Housewife and as Addison in Disney Channel’s Zombies franchise.
As the screen tests approach, fans eagerly await the announcement of who will don the cape and bring this new, hardened version of Supergirl to life. With such talented actresses in the running, the future of Supergirl in the DC Universe looks incredibly promising.
