In the recent announcement of the 96th Academy Awards nominations, it is undeniable that many exceptional films were overlooked, leaving a trail of disappointment in their wake. Despite their massive qualities and accomplishments, these films failed to achieve a single nomination, and it is a shame that they were not given the recognition they deserved.

Among the most exemplary of these films is “Still: A Michael J. Fox Story”, a documentary that delves deep into the life and struggles of the beloved actor and advocate Michael J. Fox. With a powerful and poignant narrative, the film showcases Fox’s unwavering optimism in the face of an incurable disease, making it a shocking oversight that it was not nominated for Best Documentary Feature.

Another noteworthy film is “Beau is Afraid”, a horror film that defies convention with its zany execution and daunting 3-hour runtime. Despite its polarizing nature, the film boasts brilliant and hilarious performances from Joaquin Phoenix, making it a deserving contender for recognition in various categories.

Meanwhile, “The Iron Claw” tells the heartbreaking true story of the Von Erich brothers, a family of competitive wrestlers who faced numerous tragedies throughout their careers. With a powerful lead performance from Zac Efron, the film is a tear-jerking and emotionally resonating portrait of the highs and lows of professional wrestling.

Meanwhile, “Fallen Leaves”, a Finnish love story, is a poignant and powerful portrayal of the challenges of poverty and the power of love. Despite its critical acclaim, the film was overlooked, leaving a sense of disappointment and frustration for its fans.

Other notable films that deserved recognition include “BlackBerry”, a cynical and grounded corporate biopic that boasts a stand-out performance from Glenn Howerton; “Priscilla”, a romantic drama that explores the life of Priscilla Presley alongside Elvis; “The Taste of Things”, a culinary drama that explores the world of fine cuisine; “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret”, a coming-of-age comedy-drama that adeptly captures the struggles of adolescence; “Asteroid City”, a quirky and masterfully crafted sci-fi film from Wes Anderson; and “All of Us Strangers”, a poignant and powerful drama that explores the struggles of the LGBTQ+ community.

These films, among others, demonstrate the sense of disappointment and disillusionment that washes over fans and critics alike when exceptional films are overlooked by the Academy. Despite their lack of recognition, however, these films will continue to resonate with audiences and leave a lasting impact on the film industry.
