Sam Heughan’s television debut as Jamie Fraser in Outlander marked a significant departure from his initial auditions for various roles on Game of Thrones. Despite the strong acting performances and breakout stars on Game of Thrones, Heughan’s role as Jamie Fraser turned out to be the better debut role for him. As a Highlander embroiled in conflict with British forces, Jamie Fraser’s love for his country and his ideals often place him in perilous, traumatic situations. Heughan’s performance during the Battle of Culloden and his swoony reputation as the dashing Highlander who charms time-traveling doctor Claire have made him a fan favorite.

Before landing the role of Jamie Fraser, Heughan auditioned for several roles on Game of Thrones, including Renly, Loras, and members of the Night’s Watch. He would have made a charismatic addition to the show, but ultimately found his perfect debut as Jamie Fraser in Outlander. The Scottish actor’s brief audition for Renly Baratheon, Loras Tyrell, and the Night’s Watch shows the range of roles he was considering and how close he came to joining the Game of Thrones cast.

Outlander boasts a comparable level of fan support to Game of Thrones, although the “roles that got away” led to something even better for Heughan. In his memoir Clanlands with Graham McTavish, Heughan opened up about how the kilts worn in Outlander reminded him of his late father, making the role even more significant to him. Heughan’s performance in Outlander is rightfully unforgettable, and it’s no surprise the show has earned a loyal following.

The historical fantasy genre and the role of Jamie Fraser allowed Heughan to showcase his acting skills and deliver an unforgettable performance. Heughan’s connection to Outlander ran deeper due to the kilts worn by the characters, which reminded him of his late father. The show’s ability to convey the complexities and emotions of the characters is due in large part to Heughan’s authentic performance. Heughan’s television debut as Jamie Fraser in Outlander was a perfect fit for the Scottish actor, and his connection to the show, both on and off screen, has made him a beloved figure in fantasy television.
