In 2007, Ridley Scott directed the crime drama American Gangster, which told the story of Frank Lucas, a notorious Harlem crime boss played by Denzel Washington. The film accurately depicted Lucas’s rise to power and his brutal nature, showcasing his empire-building techniques and creative smuggling methods. However, the truth behind the startling story is even more shocking, revealing the horrific destruction caused by Lucas’s operation.

According to the film, Lucas operated on fear, using violence and intimidation to maintain his position. He formed an unlikely friendship with detective Richie Roberts, who believed in giving him a second chance. In reality, Lucas worked for a retired Army sergeant named Leslie “Ike” Atkinson, who smuggled millions of dollars worth of heroin into the US via military aircraft. This operation, which generated over $400 million, was facilitated by US soldiers and involved creative smuggling methods.

Despite his brutal nature, Lucas formed a friendship with Richie Roberts, who played a significant role in his capture. Roberts had always believed that Lucas felt remorse for the damage he caused and was persuaded to cooperate with the authorities. The irony of their friendship is that Roberts, who had initially brought down Lucas, went on to become godfather to his son, Ray Lucas, and even paid for him to attend a private Catholic school.

For Washington, the character of Frank Lucas represents a man who could have achieved greatness if he had chosen a different path. The impairment caused to the lives of many was horrific and saddening, but it’s a story the world deserves to know. Scott expertly produced a film that will entertain for centuries to come, and American Gangster delivers on all fronts as a crime film. The film tells the story of a man who rose to power on the streets of Harlem, using fear and intimidation to maintain his position. It’s a cautionary tale about the devastating consequences of drug addiction and the importance of accountability. Despite its dark subject matter, the film is a thrilling and thought-provoking portrayal of the American dream gone wrong. Denzel Washington’s dominating performance as Frank Lucas convinced audiences that a combination of efficiency and ruthlessness permits authority on the streets of Harlem and beyond.
