Season 2 of HBO’s “House of the Dragon” is set to premiere in June, and fans are already gearing up for the impending conflict between the rival factions within House Targaryen. The release of a new set of character posters highlights the division between the Greens, led by Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), and the Blacks, under Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy). These posters, featuring key characters cloaked in their respective faction colors, emphasize the looming war within the family.
The root of this conflict lies in the question of succession following the death of King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine). The Greens support his firstborn son, Aegon Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney), who is depicted on the Iron Throne holding his crown.
Conversely, the Blacks support Rhaenyra, the late king’s chosen successor, who is shown with a determined expression, gazing out a window. Season 2 will focus on both factions as they gather their forces in preparation for the inevitable, bloody clash. Key allegiances include Rhaenyra’s husband-uncle Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) siding with the Blacks and her and Aegon’s brother Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) siding with the Greens.
The star-studded cast from the first season will mostly return for the second season. This includes Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Sonoya Mizuno, Rhys Ifans, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall, Roger Evans, Luke and Elliot Tittensor, and Matthew Needham. The returning cast will be joined by new characters played by Clinton Liberty (Addam of Hull), Jamie Kenna (Ser Alfred Broome), Tom Taylor (Lord Cregan Stark), Vincent Regan (Ser Rickard Thorne), Kieran Bew (Hugh), and Tom Bennett (Ulf).
Expectations for Season 2 are high, especially following the success of the first season, which received critical and audience acclaim despite the mixed reception of the final season of “Game of Thrones.” The new season aims to address some criticisms from Season 1, notably the frequent time jumps.
According to HBO and Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys, Season 2 will have a more linear timeline, beginning right after the death of Rhaenyra’s son Lucerys (Elliot Grihault). The season promises increased bloodshed and emotional intensity as the two sides of the Targaryen family prepare for war.
“House of the Dragon” Season 2 premieres on HBO in June, while Season 1 is currently available for streaming on Max. Fans looking for more details about the upcoming season can find comprehensive information in various guides and updates provided by HBO.
