Bill Skarsgård takes on a gritty, action-packed role in the new trailer for “Boy Kills World.” Directed by Moritz Mohr, this intense film stars Skarsgård as the titular “Boy,” whose family is brutally murdered. Left deaf and mute by the same ruthless killers, Boy embarks on a path of vengeance. The red band trailer, filled with striking visuals and raw energy, teases Skarsgård’s transformation into a formidable force.
The storyline centers around Boy, who seeks retribution against Hilda Van Der Koy (Famke Janssen), the twisted matriarch of a corrupt post-apocalyptic dynasty.
Orphaned and disabled, Boy is driven by an inner voice inspired by his favorite childhood video game. Under the guidance of a mysterious shaman (played by Yayan Ruhian), Boy hones his skills to become a deadly weapon. The narrative unfolds as Boy unleashes a wave of bloody martial arts chaos during the annual purge of dissidents, ultimately joining a desperate resistance group.
The film premiered as part of the Midnight Madness series at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 9, 2023. Director Moritz Mohr shared his excitement about having Sam Raimi as a producer.
Raimi was entertained by a concept trailer for the film, leading to his enthusiastic involvement. Mohr recounted the moment Raimi showed his support:
“It was complete insanity. Two hours later, we were all hanging out at a Five Guys in LA. The email arrived, and it just said, ‘Sam flipped.’ It became our battle cry for the next few weeks.”
“Boy Kills World” features a stellar cast alongside Skarsgård. Michelle Dockery portrays the sinister Melanie Van Der Koy, brandishing a machine gun in the trailer, while Janssen’s Hilda Van Der Koy is responsible for the heinous acts that set Boy on his vengeful path. The cast also includes Brett Gelman, Sharlto Copley, Jessica Rothe, and Isaiah Mustafa.
Critics who previewed the film at TIFF have given it a 75% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Meagan Navarro of Bloody Disgusting praised its eventual payoff, describing the film as a brawler that leaves audiences eager for more action.
Film Threat’s Alan Ng likened the movie to a thrilling roller coaster, while Erik Childress of the Movie Madness podcast highlighted its unique humor and impressive fight sequences, comparing it favorably to “The Raid.”
Set for an official release in April, “Boy Kills World” promises a high-octane blend of martial arts mayhem and dark, post-apocalyptic storytelling. Fans can expect a wild ride filled with vengeance, action, and an unforgettable performance by Bill Skarsgård.
