This year’s remake of the beloved 80s action flick, “Road House,” has achieved massive streaming success, with Prime Video reporting a record-breaking 50 million worldwide viewers over its first two weekends. This milestone makes “Road House” the most-watched produced film debut on a global scale, according to the studio.
Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon MGM Studios, released a statement praising the film’s success and the efforts of the filmmaking team and cast, led by Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal.
She commended the hard work and dedication of everyone involved, highlighting the phenomenal performances of the cast, which includes Conor McGregor, Daniela Melchior, Darren Barnet, Billy Magnussen, Jessica Williams, Lukas Gage, Arturo Castro, and JD Pardo, among others.
Salke expressed delight in seeing the film resonate with both fans of the original and new audiences, calling it an entertaining, action-packed ride that has sparked conversations worldwide.
While there are some caveats to the viewership numbers, such as the undefined criteria for a ‘view,’ “Road House” performed exceptionally well in streaming rankings. In its first week, the remake garnered 1.7 billion minutes watched, suggesting significant engagement. This streaming triumph may lead director Doug Liman and Jake Gyllenhaal to speculate on the movie’s potential theatrical performance.
“Road House,” now streaming on Prime Video, is directed by Doug Liman, known for “The Bourne Identity” and “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” The screenplay, written by Anthony Bagarozzi (“The Nice Guys”) and Charles Mondry (“Doc Savage”), features Jake Gyllenhaal as Elwood Dalton.
The cast includes notable names such as Billy Magnussen, Daniela Melchior, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Lukas Gage, Hannah Love Lanier, Travis Van Winkle, B.K. Cannon, Arturo Castro, Dominique Columbus, Beau Knapp, and Bob Menery. UFC champion fighter Conor McGregor makes his film debut as Knox, one of the main villains.
The film has also received positive critical reception. MovieWeb’s James Melzer praised it for honoring the original without being overly nostalgic, noting that it stands independently with top-notch action sequences, a potentially sequel-ready ending, and strong performances throughout.
The official synopsis describes the film as an adrenaline-fueled reimagining of the 80s cult classic, where ex-UFC fighter Dalton, played by Gyllenhaal, takes a job as a bouncer at a roadhouse in the Florida Keys, only to uncover that the supposed paradise harbors dark secrets.
