Jay Roach, known for directing hits like Austin Powers and Bombshell, is set to helm a remake of the 1989 dark comedy The War of the Roses. This new project, now titled The Roses, is a collaboration with Searchlight and boasts an impressive cast, including Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman.
Both actors have earned critical acclaim and Oscar nominations for their past performances, with Cumberbatch known for his role as Stephen Strange in the Doctor Strange film series and Colman for her portrayal of Sonya Falsworth in Secret Invasion.
The original film, The War of the Roses, featured Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner in a darkly humorous portrayal of a couple’s bitter divorce battle, based on Warren Adler’s 1981 novel. In this modern retelling, Cumberbatch and Colman will take on the roles of Oliver and Barbara Rose, injecting their unique styles into the tumultuous relationship.
Tony McNamara, acclaimed for his work on Poor Things, will write the screenplay for The Roses. The film aims to preserve the original’s blend of dark humor and dramatic tension, offering a fresh perspective on the timeless tale of a marriage gone awry.
In addition to their starring roles, both Cumberbatch and Colman will also serve as producers. Cumberbatch will produce through his company SunnyMarch, alongside Leah Clarke and Adam Ackland.
Colman will produce for South of the River, together with Ed Sinclair and Tom Carver. Jay Roach and Michelle Graham will also produce, with Jonathan R. Adler and Michael Adler of Adler Entertainment Trust as executive producers.
The Roses promises a fresh take on the classic tale, with the dynamic duo of Cumberbatch and Colman bringing their formidable talents to the forefront.
Recently, Cumberbatch has received praise for his role in Wes Anderson’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and will appear in the upcoming Netflix series Eric. Colman, an Oscar winner for The Favourite, continues to grab audiences and will be seen in the family sequel Paddington in Peru.
While the release date for The Roses has not yet been announced, anticipation is already high for this star-studded remake. The original film, The War of the Roses, remains a beloved classic, and this modern adaptation is set to introduce the story to a new generation. Cumberbatch and Colman are expected to showcase their versatility in this dark comedy, delivering a contemporary take on a tale of love turned sour.
