The Big Picture: Lexie Grey’s Tragic Demise in Grey’s Anatomy

In Grey’s Anatomy, the character of Lexie Grey, played by Chyler Leigh, had a planned exit from the show, which was a shocking moment for fans. However, it was not the original plan to have Lexie die in the Season 8 finale, but rather at the hospital. Showrunner Shonda Rhimes had originally intended for Lexie to die after hitting her head at the hospital, not in the plane crash. This was not Shonda’s favorite plan, as it would have meant Lexie dying without Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) by her side, without saying goodbye to her sister Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), or getting to see Mark one last time.

Shonda wrote that she wanted to have Lexie and Mark together when she left, which made her original plan too easy and straightforward. It would have been unrealistic to have Lexie die at the hospital without any of her loved ones being there. This new plan allowed for a grander and more emotional exit, making it more believable and impactful for fans.

Lexie’s character was a fan favorite, and her death was devastating for many viewers. Her demise was more impactful because it was a tragic event that had a ripple effect on the rest of the characters, including Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) losing her leg and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) suffering a hand injury.

Mark Sloan’s death was also a crucial part of the storyline, as he was leaving the show, and his character needed a proper sendoff. Shonda had to weigh different options, but ultimately chose to have Mark die to maintain the integrity of his character. It was not feasible for Mark to abandon his daughter Sofia, and his death would allow him to be reunited with Lexie, making their love remain true.

In the end, while it was not easy to say goodbye to Lexie or Mark, Shonda Rhimes’ decision was respectful to both characters and fans. It may not have been the most ideal ending for everyone, but it was a storytelling choice that made sense for the show and its characters.
