The Simpsons’ Journey to the Heart of Springfield: A Look into the Show’s Unique Continuity

As the longest-running primetime scripted show in television history, “The Simpsons” has had its fair share of continuity errors. However, unlike other shows, “The Simpsons” has chosen to ignore continuity and move forward, leaving any potential errors behind. This unique approach has allowed the show to remain fresh and exciting for its audience.

In an episode titled “Lisa the Vegetarian,” Homer’s family visits a fairy tale-themed amusement park, where Lisa is charmd by the petting zoo lambs. After witnessing the lambs’ bleating, Lisa becomes a vegetarian, and her family objects to her lifestyle choice. Despite feeling ridiculed, Lisa visits Apu at the Kwik-E-Mart, where she meets Paul and Linda McCartney, who are also vegetarians. They teach her to respect others’ views while tolerating their own.

The real-life Paul McCartney, a vegetarian himself, guest-starred in the episode, but with a condition: Lisa would remain a vegetarian for the rest of the series. This demand was unusual, but the showrunners agreed, ensuring that Lisa remained a vegetarian for the rest of the series. Paul McCartney even appeared in the show, using the episode to poke fun at long-standing rumors of his “death” and the practice of backmasking hidden messages.
