The Unforgettable World of To Have and Have Not

Humphrey Bogart (Via IMDB)

In film noir, few actors have had a lasting impact as significant as Humphrey Bogart. Known for his iconic roles in films like “The Maltese Falcon” and “Casablanca”, Bogart’s versatility shone through in his portrayal of Harry Morgan, a self-centered sports fisherman, in “To Have and Have Not”. Set during World War II, the film takes place in the French colony of Martinique, where Harry is drawn into the war when he is asked to help the French resistance smuggle political activists on his boat.

Despite claiming to be neutral, Harry is forced to participate in the effort when he falls in love with Marie “Slim” Browning, a free-spirited American woman trying to leave the country. The romantic chemistry between Bogart and his co-star, Lauren Bacall, drives the narrative momentum of the film. Bogart’s nuanced performance showcases Harry’s transition from a reluctant hero to a hero willing to risk his life for those he loves.

Unlike many of his iconic characters, Harry is portrayed as a reluctant hero, who initially refuses to help the French resistance. However, as he spends more time with Slim, Harry realizes that his own happiness is worth fighting for, even if it puts him in danger. The film’s noir elements add thrilling tension, as Harry is forced to avoid being persecuted by the police who are trying to keep the island’s borders secure.

Despite comparisons to “Casablanca”, which was released around the same time, “To Have and Have Not” is a unique film that explores the threat of German victory and the importance of getting involved in the war effort. Director Howard Hawks’ message that even someone as seemingly isolated as Harry has to get involved in the war resonates with audiences. Bogart’s performance shines through as he brings Harry’s character to life, making this film a must-watch for any fan of film noir.

“To Have and Have Not” is available to rent on Prime Video in the U.S.
