n the classic sitcom, “M*A*S*H”, ranking the lovable characters is a task that has sparked debate among fans. From the get-go, it’s clear that the show’s premise, which softens the edge of the original film, makes the characters more endearing. With a total of 11 seasons, 11 main characters, and a great cast, it’s challenging to decide who’s most likable. However, examining the characters’ personalities, behaviors, and growth throughout the show, we can come to a conclusion.
Frank Burns, initially, is not likable at all. He’s incompetent and causes chaos. Trapper John, his friend and colleague, is also not well-fleshed out or endearing. Father Mulcahy is decent but not particularly lovable, serving his purpose within the cast. Charles Emerson Winchester III is a significant improvement over Frank Burns, intelligent, and decent, but initially cold. He grows on the audience as the show progresses.
Captain B.J. Hunnicutt is more endearing than Trapper John, a bit more grounded, and disciplined, but still engaging in some chicanery. Colonel Sherman T. Potter is a likable commanding officer, someone who emphasizes discipline but is fair. Maxwell Q. Klinger, initially one-note, grows and becomes more compassionate over time. Lt. Colonel Henry Blake, the previous commanding officer, is a cool guy who lets the team have some fun.
Margaret Houlihan is initially cold and opposed to the lovable characters but gradually opens up and becomes endearing. Walter “Radar” O’Reilly is an absolute standout, naive yet competent, and lovable. Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce, played by Alan Alda, is the perfect protagonist. His complex and sympathetic personality makes him the most likable main character, despite his flaws.
Each character brings something unique to the show, and the ranking can be debated. Nonetheless, this evaluation highlights the complexities and developments of each character throughout the series.
