Pretty Little Liars and Riverdale: An Unlikely Connection

A Still From Riverdale (Via IMDB)

The emergence of the new “Pretty Little Liars” reboot, “Original Sin,” has sparked debate among fans, with whispers of a potential connection to The CW’s teen drama “Riverdale.” While both shows feature cult storylines and eerie mysteries, concerns arise that “Pretty Little Liars” might be leaning too heavily on its predecessor.

While both shows exist in the same universe, “Pretty Little Liars” cleverly avoids simply becoming a copy of “Riverdale.” The reboot features original characters and storylines, setting itself apart. However, as the seasons progress, striking similarities emerge.

Season 2 of “Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin” features a setting that echoes Riverdale, with an ice cream shop and a diner reminiscent of the iconic Pop’s Chocklit Shoppe. Brand names are intentionally changed to resemble their real-world counterparts, creating a familiar yet uncanny atmosphere.

The crossover between the two shows is undeniable, with the mention of the Sisters of Quiet Mercy, a sanitarium central to “Riverdale.” This explicit connection implies that the two shows exist in the same continuity. While this crossover is harmless on its own, the increasingly similar storylines suggest “Pretty Little Liars” might be relying too heavily on “Riverdale’s” formula.

“Pretty Little Liars” thrives on its own unique mysteries and storylines. By ditching the unnecessary attachments to “Riverdale,” the reboot can carve its own path and establish itself as a charming horror/mystery series.
