The Acolyte, a mystery-thriller series soon to be released on Disney+, takes viewers into the final days of the High Republic era. The story follows a former Padawan, played by Amandla Stenberg, who joins forces with her Jedi Master, Lee Jung-jae, to investigate a series of crimes. The series features a stellar cast, including Carrie-Anne Moss, Manny Jacinto, Dafne Keen, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Charlie Barnett, and Dean-Charles Chapman, and is set to premiere on June 4, 2024.
The Acolyte’s title refers to a position within the Sith ranks. While Acolytes have yet to claim the title of Sith, they strive towards it, making them a potential threat to the Jedi. They play a critical role in the Rule of Two, serving as potential Apprentices working to become Sith and preserving the system’s balance.
The Rule of Two is a Sith construct, which dictates that there must always be a Master and an Apprentice. The Master embodies the power of the dark side, while the Apprentice craves it. The Apprentice follows the Master’s orders until they seize the Master’s title, killing them to take on a new Apprentice, continuing the cycle. Acolytes serve as dark side users waiting for a chance to take on the lesser role of Apprentice or help the Master eliminate overly ambitious Apprentices.
Sith Acolytes are newly fallen Force Users not yet officially recognized as Sith but seeking to become part of the order. As they learn the ways of the dark side, potential Sith Acolytes resemble Apprentices, playing a similar role while transitioning towards change. As they move along the process, Acolytes face constant danger since gaining a position requires the death of one of the two Sith.
Familiar Sith Acolytes include Asajj Ventress from Star Wars: The Clone Wars. In The Acolyte, Stenberg’s character, Mae, is one to watch, as she embodies the trademarks of a Sith Acolyte. Viewers can look forward to exploring the world of the Sith organization more deeply through the series.
