Despite being canceled by CBS after its sixth season, S.W.A.T. has continued to thrive, regaining momentum after a move to a Friday time slot and ultimately being renewed for season 7 and 8. The series, which centers on the daily lives of a Los Angeles S.W.A.T. team, has delivered solid ratings for the network, thanks to its fast-paced storytelling and reliable cast led by Shemar Moore.

The show’s journey to success was not without its challenges. Initially, CBS canceled S.W.A.T. after six seasons, citing financial struggles and the rise of streaming platforms. However, the network later reversed its decision, opting to move forward with season 7. The show’s cast and crew, including stars Shemar Moore and creators Shawn Ryan and Aaron Rahsaan Thomas, publicly expressed their disappointment and outrage at the initial cancellation.

Sony, the studio behind S.W.A.T., had brought the project to CBS in the first place. The show’s creators, including Ryan and Thomas, pitched the concept to CBS and eventually secured a deal. Moore’s participation was seen as a major factor in the show’s success, with Ryan citing the actor as the “secret sauce” to making S.W.A.T. a success.

Over the years, S.W.A.T. has faced stiff competition from other crime dramas on CBS, including NCIS and Blue Bloods. However, the show’s ratings remained steady, and CBS continued to renew it. Despite struggling ratings, the show remained one of the network’s most popular programs.

The show’s resurgence began when CBS moved S.W.A.T. to a Friday time slot, joining Blue Bloods and Magnum P.I. This change led to a 35 percent increase in ratings for season 5 and another 17 percent increase in ratings for season 6. Despite this success, CBS still canceled the show, citing financial struggles and the rise of streaming platforms.

However, Sony and the show’s creators remained committed to S.W.A.T.’s future. The studio secured a deal with Netflix, making the show available to stream in the U.S. and extending the show’s life beyond broadcast. For now, the future of S.W.A.T. remains uncertain, but its resilience and adaptability have allowed it to thrive in an ever-changing television terrain.
