Katie Holmes Had No Idea About Dawson’s Creek Stars Whatsapp Group

Katie Holmes has some catching up to do with her former Dawson’s Creek costars.

In a new interview with the U.K. outlet The Times, Holmes, 45, mentioned that although she enjoys staying in touch with many of her former castmates, WhatsApp proves a bit “too much” for her.

In response to a comment about there being a long-running Dawson’s Creek WhatsApp group chat (according to costar Joshua Jackson), Holmes joked with fake outrage: “Really?”

“All of us text every now and then, but I wasn’t aware of the WhatsApp,” she said. “But you know what? I’m really bad at WhatsApp. I never check it because it’s a little too much.”

Holmes — who played main character Dawson Leery’s best friend Joey Potter in the 1990s teen series — said that she keeps in touch with Jackson, lead James Van Der Beek, and costar Michelle Williams “every now and then.”

“Everyone’s grown up and is busy, but the bond will forever be there,” she told the outlet.

Elsewhere in her interview with The Times, the actress revealed that her time on the series helped inspire her fashion sensibilities.

“I feel my education in clothes and their meaning came out of working in television and movies, working with great costume designers and having it explained to me what it means if a character has a cable-knit sweater over a plain sweater, and how that reveals a part of them,” she said.

“I fell in love with thinking like that, and letting the clothes really dictate a certain part of someone’s essence,” she added.

Dawson’s Creek aired on the WB (now the CW) from 1998 to 2003. Holmes has been candid about how the drama series shaped her career in the past. Just last year, she spoke with Glamour about how it helped her put her teenage feelings into words.

“I felt like, as a teenager, I had so many different feelings, trying to go from being a girl to a woman,” Holmes explained. “And I felt like [showrunner Kevin Williamson] had this way of putting words to those feelings.”

The actress also shared that playing Joey in the show helped her process her real-life teenage challenges. “So for me, playing that role, I was like, ‘Oh, that’s what that means. Oh, I get that.’ I loved doing it. It was a really fun, profound experience,” she told Glamour.

Holmes, who is mom to 18-year-old daughter Suri, also previously opened up about her feelings about the show’s longevity, given that it still has fans after more than 20 years of being off the air.

“It’s pretty wild,” she said during an April 2023 appearance on Sirius XM’s The Jess Cagle Show.

“I mean, I’m kind of amazed that people are connecting to it — only because the world was, it was right before phones and … before the internet really took off and social media, and life now is so different than the simplicity that was portrayed between this group of friends.”
