The cause of death for YouTube star Ben Potter has been revealed.

The internet personality, 40, known as Comicstorian, who had amassed over three million subscribers on the video-sharing platform, tragically died in a single-vehicle car crash on Saturday, June 8.

In a press release shared on Tuesday, June 11, the Colorado State Patrol detailed that the incident occurred at 9:19 a.m. local time on I-25 near Fort Collins.

“The Windsor resident was southbound on I-25 at milepost 267.5 when his silver Toyota 4Runner traveled off the right shoulder of the interstate.

He continued to cross over the frontage road paralleling the interstate before rolling his vehicle multiple times,” the release stated.

Despite wearing his seatbelt during the accident, Potter “succumbed to injuries from the crash while at the scene.”

The content creator was the only person in the vehicle, and no other vehicles were involved, CSP added.

While the investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, impairment and excessive speed do not appear to be factors at this time, according to the release.

In a message shared on X (formerly known as Twitter), his wife previously mentioned he died “in an unfortunate accident.”

“To many of you, he was Comicstorian, voicing stories from across multiple different mediums. To his loved ones, he was one of the best and most supportive individuals anyone could ask for,” Nathalie shared without providing details of the accident.

“As a husband, a son, a brother, a friend, or even just a stranger, Ben was loving and genuine. He was someone who would listen and make time for his loved ones.

He would do his best to make everyone laugh and make sure they were okay. He was our rock and he’d reassure his loved ones whenever they needed it,” she added.

Nathalie expressed that her husband — who created audio dramas of comic books on his Comicstorian account, regularly discussing the Marvel and DC Universes — was her world.

“I need time to be with friends and family. I have so many things I need to figure out but firstly, I need to grieve,” she added. “I ask that you respect my privacy as well as everyone else’s. Right now my priority is preserving everything he’s built and I don’t have any plans beyond that.”

Regarding the future, Nathalie called her husband’s channel “one of his greatest accomplishments” and said he “wouldn’t want it to end like this.”

“Ben spent over 10 years spreading his love and appreciation for his hobbies. It was through his love of exciting stories and well-written characters that got him started on YouTube,” she added.

“The team and I want to keep that going. To honor him by continuing to tell great stories by great people, as well as to keep the memory of our very own superhero alive. We supported each other on everything we wanted to do and I’m not about to stop now.”

Ben, who posted almost 4,000 YouTube videos, shared his last upload — titled Why DC’s Reboots Beat Marvel — just a day before his death.
