The Most Underrated Action Movies of the 2020s

A Still From The Woman King (2022) (Via IMDB)

For over a century, action has been a staple of the film industry, charming audiences worldwide with explosive stunts, intricate fight choreography, and thrilling narratives. The 21st century has produced its fair share of exceptional action movies, from blockbuster hits like “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Avatar: The Way of Water” to Academy Award-winning titles like “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “All Quiet on the Western Front.” Despite the many talented action movies from the past decade, a few exceptional and often overlooked films have been lost in the mix. These hidden gems, while not receiving the recognition they deserve, showcase innovative storytelling, impressive action sequences, and memorable characters.

“Boy Kills World” (2024) features Bill Skarsgård as the titular character, a mute, revenge-seeking individual who uses a video game announcer for his inner dialogue. The film’s strength lies in its impressive action sequences, over-the-top style, and dark humor, making it a satisfying watch for fans of the genre. “Plane” (2023) stars Gerard Butler as a pilot forced to land his damaged plane in a war zone and navigate the treacherous jungle. While it might initially seem like an ordinary “man versus the world” story, “Plane” cleverly leans into its absurdity, creating a thrilling and engaging experience.

In “Kate” (2021), Mary Elizabeth Winstead delivers a powerful performance as the titular character, a female assassin seeking revenge within a 24-hour time frame. The film’s slick and brutal action sequences pay homage to classic revenge thrillers. “Sisu” (2022), directed by Jalmari Helander, stands out for its stunning physical performances, minimal dialogue, and impressive gore, masterfully conveying its story through action and editing. “The Woman King” (2022), directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, tells the story of the Agojie Warriors, a group of African women who defend their continent. Led by Viola Davis’s powerful General Nanisca, the film shines for its passion and historicity.

“Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie” (2022) proves that animated action films can rival their live-action counterparts. Featuring the iconic Turtles as they take on an alien threat, the film showcases thrilling action sequences and a strong sense of brotherhood. “Ambulance” (2022), directed by Michael Bay, brings back the director’s signature action style. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as brothers on the run from the police, the film masterfully incorporates drone shots to enhance its action sequences.

In “The Old Guard” (2020), a Netflix original, a group of immortal mercenaries confronts a corrupt tech billionaire who intends to replicate their immortality. Led by Charlize Theron, the film’s action sequences stand out for their exceptional choreography and worldbuilding. “Nobody” (2021) showcases Bob Odenkirk as Hutch Mansell, a suburban father turned vigilante. The film not only delivers iconic action sequences but also highlights Odenkirk’s versatility as an actor.

Finally, “Polite Society” (2023), directed by Nida Manzoor, follows Ria Khan as she plans to save her sister from a dark conspiracy. With standout stunts and performances, “Polite Society” is a must-watch for action enthusiasts. These films, though not always in the spotlight, exemplify the best of what the action genre has to offer, blending thrilling narratives with innovative storytelling and memorable characters.
