Adam Sandler is thrilled to return to the golf course for the upcoming sequel to Happy Gilmore.
At the premiere of his new comedy special Adam Sandler: Love You on Tuesday, Aug. 20, the comedian shared with his excitement about the highly anticipated sequel to his beloved 1996 golf comedy.
“We’ve been working hard to create something that we think people will really enjoy, and I’m more excited about this than anything I’ve worked on in years,” Sandler said.
Rumors about a sequel began circulating in March after Christopher McDonald, who starred alongside Sandler in the original Happy Gilmore, mentioned during a radio interview on Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan that Sandler had shown him “the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2.”
In April, Drew Barrymore, Sandler’s longtime friend, hinted that the movie was in development after speaking with him.
On May 15, Netflix confirmed that Sandler is partnering with the streaming platform for the sequel.
Although details about the plot remain under wraps, Sandler revealed during his appearance on The Tonight Show on Aug. 20 that Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce will make a cameo, along with other athletes.
“We didn’t want to let anyone down. People have been asking me for a long time, ‘Do Happy Gilmore 2,’ and I was always hesitant, thinking I’d disappoint them,” Sandler explained on The Tonight Show.
“But then my buddy Tim Herlihy and I came up with an idea we’re really excited about. We worked hard on it, and we’re still working to make it a movie that everyone will love. A lot of golfers are being really nice and are going to be part of it, too.”
Sandler also mentioned on The Tonight Show that filming is expected to begin in New Jersey in the coming weeks. He joked that he needs to practice his character Happy Gilmore’s iconic golf swing.
“You know, the hop, skip, and hit. I tried it recently—it seems simple, but when I tried it, I fell and ended up lying on the ground for a while, drinking a lemonade,” he joked with host Jimmy Fallon. “But I’ll be ready; when it comes time to shoot, I’m a gamer, man.”
