Michael Sheen responded to the emotional impact of the end of Good Omens Season 2 with a knowing acknowledgment: “I know, I know.” The good news, however, is that the series will continue with a third season, scheduled to begin filming in 2025.
In a recent interview, Sheen shared limited details about the upcoming season. “It’s still in development, but obviously I’m very excited to work with David again, and I love that character,” he said. “I’m very excited about it.”
Sheen and David Tennant have delivered remarkable performances as the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley, respectively, which made the conclusion of Season 2 particularly poignant.
In the finale, the Metatron (played by Derek Jacobi) offered Aziraphale the position of supreme archangel in Heaven and proposed that Crowley could be restored to full angelic status. Aziraphale saw this as an opportunity for them to make a significant impact together.
However, Crowley suggested (as he had before) that they leave everything behind and be together as an “us.” After a touching kiss, the two characters parted ways, with Aziraphale ascending to Heaven with the Metatron (who hinted at the Second Coming) and Crowley driving off in the Bentley.
“One of the extraordinary things about being a part of [Good Omens] is the audience, the fans, the fandom of it. You have to take it very seriously because people get really affected by it,” Sheen noted.
“And seeing how people reacted to the end of Season 2 was extraordinary. So yeah, I hope, and I’m sure, that Season 3 will be a satisfying experience for everyone.”
Season 2 premiered on Prime Video in July 2023. By December of the same year, Prime Video had announced the renewal of *Good Omens* for a third and final season.
The series, based on the novel by Neil Gaiman and Sir Terry Pratchett, will tackle the end of the world once more. “In Season Three, we will deal once more with the end of the world.
The plans for Armageddon are going wrong. Only Crowley and Aziraphale working together can hope to put it right. And they aren’t talking,” Gaiman stated upon the renewal announcement.
As of now, only Sheen and Tennant are confirmed for Season 3. When TV Insider spoke with Jon Hamm, who plays Gabriel, in May 2024, he was uncertain about his return.
“I don’t know. I hope so. I hope he’s happy somewhere with his life, so to speak, in the universe. I think that there might be something happening, but I don’t want to get too far out over my skis and I don’t want to spoil anything,” he said.
