As Suzie, the protagonist of Apple TV+’s drama Sunny, continues her relentless pursuit of the truth about her husband Masa’s and young son Zen’s disappearance, her journey takes an unexpected and dramatic turn in Episode 8. The episode delves into Masa’s mysterious past, revealing the complexities of his character and the events that shaped him into the person he became.

Through flashbacks, it is revealed that Masa grew up as a lonely child who found solace in the company of a beetle he caught, and struggled to understand why his father disapproved of him. This traumatic experience led Masa to become a hermit, or hikikimori, for two years, which is a significant aspect of his backstory. In this period of solitude, Masa discovered his purpose in life by developing an improved program for a trash bot, using trial and error to create an AI that understood human behavior.

The revelation of Masa’s past is a crucial step in understanding the events that unfolded leading up to the plane crash that claimed his life, as well as his marriage to Suzie and his relationship with his son. The episode ends on a cliffhanger, as Suzie and her allies discover that the yakuza are tracking a fourth figure, which Suzie believes is Masa, whose fate remains uncertain.

Despite the setbacks, Suzie remains determined to uncover the truth and find her husband, driven by her love for him and her desperation to reunite with her son. The episode’s shocking cliffhanger ending leaves the audience on the edge of their seats, eager to find out what will happen next in the series. With only two episodes remaining in the season, the plot is likely to intensify, and Suzie’s quest for truth will continue to take dramatic turns.
