The highly anticipated return of James Graham’s powerful award-winning series, Sherwood, is set to hit BritBox. The show, influenced by real tragedy, follows the investigation into a startling crime in a Nottinghamshire mining village. The second season, which premiered on November 14, sees a new sheriff in town who is concerned about a new controversial mine opening. The community will be tested once again as the story unfolds.

The first season of Sherwood was not a one-to-one adaptation of true events, but the inspirations are undeniable. According to The Guardian, Graham grew up nearby and brought his experiences to the screen. The conflict between the strikers and strikebreakers is a wound present in the community, and Sherwood is ultimately a fictionalized but spiritual representation of the real-life pain surrounding the mining strikes.

Graham involved the family of the real victim, Keith “Froggy” Frogson, who was killed by a samurai sword and crossbow in 2004. The story conveys the complicated emotions that were present at the time and still affect the citizens of the town today. The pain woven throughout the story is boosted by Morrissey’s role as the detective, Ian St Clair, who collaborated with historian Harry Paterson on the time to ensure his performance rang true.

Sherwood is a little bit different from other British television murder mysteries, and its unique blend of historical inspiration and fictionalized storytelling has resonated with audiences. The show’s creator, James Graham, wanted to ensure that this story was told well, even if slightly fictionalized, and his instincts were correct. The pain and struggles of the community are palpable throughout the series, making it a gripping and emotional ride.

As the story continues in Season 2, it will delve deeper into the complexities of the community and the struggles they face. With the new sheriff in town, it’s clear that trouble is brewing, and the police force and the community will be tested once again. With Morrissey returning as Ian St Clair, fans can expect a gripping and intense season as the investigation unfolds.
