Sacha Baron Cohen was seen on the set of In Ladies First for the first time this week as he filmed scenes for the upcoming Netflix film.
The actor, 53, was photographed in east London, where it was recently revealed he will star in the remake of the 2018 French romantic comedy I Am Not An Easy Man.
For one scene, Sacha donned a striking three-piece purple suit and shirt, walking down the street to the Bee Gees’ Stayin’ Alive. The Grimsby star takes on the role of a male chauvinist who finds himself in a parallel universe ruled by women.
Opposite him stars Rosamund Pike, portraying an “opinionated” character as the two go through the unfamiliar dynamics of this alternate reality.
According to reports on the film’s script, Sacha’s character—a self-absorbed womanizer—experiences a rude awakening in this matriarchal world, which becomes increasingly complicated due to Rosamund’s character.
The romantic comedy features an ensemble cast, including Richard E. Grant, Emily Mortimer, Charles Dance, Fiona Shaw, Tom Davis, and Weruche Opia.
Directed by Thea Sharrock (The Beautiful Game), the film’s screenplay is penned by Katie Silberman (Booksmart), Cinco Paul (Despicable Me), and Natalie Krinsky (Blow). While production is underway, a release date has not yet been announced.
This project marks Sacha’s return to work following the announcement of his separation from Isla Fisher earlier this year.
The couple, who had been married for over 20 years, revealed in April that they had quietly split in 2022. They shared the news in a lighthearted statement, using tennis as a metaphor for their relationship:
“After a long tennis match lasting over 20 years, we are finally putting our racquets down. In 2023 we jointly filed to end our marriage.
We have always prioritized our privacy and have been quietly working through this change. We forever share in our devotion and love for our children. We sincerely appreciate your respecting our family’s wish for privacy.”
Sacha and Isla met at a party in Australia in 2002, became engaged in 2004, and married in a Jewish ceremony in Paris in March 2010 after Isla converted to Judaism. They spent years moving between the US, UK, and Australia before settling in Western Australia in 2020.
Fisher, who was raised in Perth from the age of six, has spoken fondly about returning to her home country. In a 2021 interview with Stellar magazine, she shared, “I just feel so safe, I suppose the word is cozy, when I’m in Australia. It’s where I grew up.
I’m the happiest when I’m home. I miss it when I’m not here. I don’t feel any pressure when I’m in Australia. I don’t have to say or do or be anything. I mean, I don’t even have to wear shoes.”
Reports at the time suggested that political tensions in the US also influenced their decision to relocate. “They didn’t want to raise their kids in Trump’s America,” an insider told the Sydney Morning Herald in January 2021.
With In Ladies First now in production, fans eagerly await Sacha Baron Cohen’s comedic take on this gender-reversed universe.
