In the debut trailer for The Salt Path, Jason Isaacs and Gillian Anderson powerfully portray a couple enduring immense challenges, yet continuing to move forward.
The film, based on Raynor Winn’s memoir of the same name, chronicles the remarkable true story of a couple who, faced with overwhelming adversity, stick together and set off on a 630-mile journey along the South West Coast Path.
Directed by Marianne Elliott, marking her feature-length directorial debut, the film is a moving tribute to the resilience of the human spirit. Judging from the trailer, it promises to deeply move audiences, likely leaving them in tears when it arrives in cinemas across the UK and Ireland on April 25, 2025.
The trailer’s opening scene immediately establishes that The Salt Path will not only depict Raynor (Isaacs) and Moth Winn’s (Anderson) journey along the scenic coastal path, but it will also immerse viewers in the breathtaking cinematography of their trek.
The couple, already facing homelessness, is also grappling with a daunting health diagnosis. With nothing left to lose, they decide to go on an unforgettable adventure, walking the coastal path as far as they can.
Throughout their journey, they must contend with Raynor’s illness, the harsh elements, and ultimately, the revelation that peace can often be found in surrendering control.
Earlier this year, Collider’s Maggie Lovitt spoke with Isaacs about his role in The Salt Path. The actor emphasized how important it was for viewers to understand that the Winns’ story was based on real events. “He’s not a character, he’s a real guy,” Isaacs explained.
“These real people went through an extraordinary time. They lost everything. They lost their house and their money. In the same week that they unexpectedly lost everything they owned, including the home where their kids were growing up—though the kids were away at college, they were still kids, and there was nowhere to come home to—they went to the doctor to check on a persistent ache.
He had fallen through the roof of a barn—they were farmers—and the doctor said, ‘Oh no, it’s not arthritis. It’s a fatal neurological condition, and you don’t have very long to live.’”
Isaacs also spoke about the strength of the couple’s love and how their bond forms the emotional heart of the film. “When you see the two of them together, they’re so devoted to each other.
They’ve been together since they were teenagers,” he said. “The fact that they lost everything and partly blamed each other for it for a while, and were battling against the worst things that nature can throw at you, stripped them down to their bare core, who they were with everything lost.
Who they were, were people who had love at their core. So what I took away from it, I suppose, is that none of the stuff we have around us, none of the things we think we want, count. What really counts when it’s all gone is who we’re there for, and who’s there for us.”
The Salt Path will make its debut in UK and Irish theaters on April 25, 2025.
