Chris Evans is officially making his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as part of the cast of Avengers: Doomsday, the eagerly awaited sequel that also stars Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, according to an exclusive report by The Wrap. While Evans’ involvement has been confirmed, the precise nature and extent of his role remain under wraps.

Evans last portrayed Steve Rogers/Captain America in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, where his character’s arc concluded with Rogers retiring and passing the mantle to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson.

This summer, Evans briefly returned to the MCU in Deadpool and Wolverine, but as Johnny Storm, his character from Fox’s Fantastic Four movies, rather than Captain America.

The Russo Brothers, known for directing Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, will helm Avengers: Doomsday as well as its direct follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars. Avengers: Doomsday is currently scheduled for release on May 1, 2026.

Evans’ return to the MCU has been the subject of fan speculation for years, but Marvel Studios has declined to comment on the news. The return of Steve Rogers is particularly intriguing since Endgame concluded with him as an elderly man.

However, with Robert Downey Jr. set to reappear as a Tony Stark variant after his character’s death in the same film, it seems Marvel is open to creative reinterpretations.

Anthony Mackie, who now carries the Captain America mantle, is set to star in Captain America: Brave New World, which will hit theaters on February 14, 2025.

Chris Evans first brought Steve Rogers to life in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger. He reprised the role in its sequels, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, as well as in four Avengers films.

Outside of the MCU, Evans has built an impressive filmography, including his starring role in the 2019 whodunit Knives Out, the 2020 Apple TV+ limited series Defending Jacob, and Pixar’s 2022 animated feature Lightyear.

He also played the antagonist Lloyd Hansen in The Gray Man (2022), directed by the Russo Brothers, and starred alongside Emily Blunt in Pain Hustlers (2023) and Ana de Armas in Ghosted (2023). Currently, he appears in Amazon MGM’s holiday action film Red One opposite Dwayne Johnson. Evans is represented by CAA and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern.
