Chris Martin is still deeply connected to Dakota Johnson. Despite rumors of a breakup over the past year, the Coldplay frontman appears to have confirmed that he and the Fifty Shades of Grey actress are still happily together, though they continue to value keeping their relationship private.
“[Romantic love] is such a significant factor in everything,” Chris shared during an interview published on Dec. 19. “Even though it feels right to keep it precious and private, I’m not denying its power.”
During the interview, the 47-year-old singer mentioned Dakota, 35, multiple times, referring to her as one of his best friends, alongside his children, Apple Martin, 20, and Moses Martin, 18, whom he shares with ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow. He also noted that the couple recently enjoyed listening to Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour together.
Chris and Dakota, who have been quietly dating since meeting in 2017, have faced their share of public speculation. Earlier this year, several outlets reported that the couple had actually been engaged for years, though neither confirmed the news at the time.
In August, rumors swirled about a possible breakup. However, a representative for the couple told that the claims were “not true,” adding that “they are happily together.” Just days after the reports emerged, Dakota was seen in Malibu, California, wearing an emerald ring on her ring finger—the same one she had previously worn in 2020.
Despite their efforts to keep their relationship under wraps, Chris and Dakota have occasionally spoken about the bond they share. In a 2022 interview with Vanity Fair, Dakota reflected on their connection, saying that after they first met, “we never really left each other.”
The couple’s desire for privacy is rooted in part in their backgrounds. Chris aims to protect his family’s boundaries, while Dakota’s upbringing as the daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith has influenced her perspective on relationships in the public eye.
“Maybe I think about relationships like that differently because I grew up in my family,” Dakota said. “We were all cool. Obviously, there were times where it was not cool, but I experienced that, so I don’t want that in my life… It’s better to be kind, and it’s also really nice that everybody actually really loves each other and has each other’s backs.”
