The inspiring yet ultimately tragic story of EDM superstar Tim Bergling, known globally as Avicii, will debut on Netflix on December 31, 2024.
Avicii, who rose to prominence as one of the leading figures in the burgeoning dance music movement and an emblematic figure of the EDM scene, experienced a meteoric rise to fame.
With genre-defining international hits like Levels, Dancing In My Head, and collaborations such as co-writing and co-producing with Coldplay, he became a staple on the global club and festival circuit. Avicii’s relentless drive saw him performing to packed venues and adoring crowds, headlining events anywhere, anytime, and seemingly without pause.
As a creative innovator, he was renowned for his fast, solo production style, often crafting massive club anthems on his laptop using FL Studio, his preferred software.
However, behind the scenes, Bergling battled significant physical and mental health challenges, which eventually led him to retire from performing at the young age of 26.
Tragically, on April 20, 2018, Bergling took his own life at the age of 28, leaving the music world and his fans in profound mourning.
Now, Netflix is bringing his life story to audiences in a new documentary.
“Through unique home movies and a vast private archive, we follow Tim on a winding journey through life—from his first moments in a Stockholm maternity ward in 1989 to the heartbreaking end in Oman in 2018,” reads Netflix’s announcement.
What makes this documentary particularly compelling is Avicii’s own narration. Having cooperated fully with the project prior to his passing, Bergling’s voice guides viewers through his childhood and his rapid ascent to stardom. The film also features insights from collaborators such as Coldplay’s Chris Martin, David Guetta, and Aloe Blacc.
“This is a film where Tim himself is the narrator, sharing his inner thoughts in a way we’ve never heard before. Through Tim and those closest to him—his family, artist colleagues, and closest friends—we come to know Tim, the boy behind Avicii, for the very first time.”
In addition to the documentary, Netflix will also premiere Avicii – My Last Show, a 30-minute film capturing his final performance at Ushuaïa in Ibiza on August 26, 2016.
Both films will be available to stream on Netflix starting December 31, 2024.
