Hudson Meek, a young actor known for playing the child version of the title character in the popular action film Baby Driver and for his recent roles in several TV series, tragically passed away after falling from a moving vehicle in Alabama. He was 16 years old.
The incident occurred on December 19 in Vestavia Hills, Alabama, where Meek “sustained blunt force injuries after falling onto the road from a moving vehicle,” according to Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates, speaking to local news outlet AL.com.
Meek was transported to a local hospital but passed away “peacefully” on Saturday, as stated in an obituary posted on Searcy Funeral Homes’ website.
An emotional post on Meek’s Instagram account read, “Our hearts are broken to share that Hudson Meek went home to be with Jesus tonight. His 16 years on this earth were far too short, but he accomplished so much and significantly impacted everyone he met.”
Local authorities in Vestavia Hills are investigating the circumstances surrounding Meek’s death, as reported by WTVM.
Meek was a sophomore at Vestavia Hills High School and was a member of the Vestavia Hills Rebel Football Team. His obituary highlights his love for his faith, as well as his passions for The Simpsons—having watched all 36 seasons—the outdoors, water sports, traveling, and acting. He also cherished his close friendships.
Meek’s acting career began with small roles in TV shows and short films, but his breakout role came when he portrayed Young Baby Driver in Edgar Wright’s 2017 film Baby Driver.
In the movie, Meek played the younger version of the getaway driver, originally portrayed as an adult by Ansel Elgort, who becomes entangled with a crime boss and a heist gone wrong. The film’s success helped to launch Meek’s career, leading to subsequent roles in the TV series MacGyver, Legacies, and Found.
Meek is survived by his parents, Derek Firth Meek and Lani Wells Meek; his older brother, Tucker Firth Meek; and his grandmothers, Margaret Green Meek and Faye Searcy Wells.
A celebration of life service will be held for him on December 28 at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church in Homewood, Alabama.
