Jason Momoa is set to return to the DC universe, but his time as Aquaman has officially come to an end. The actor has now signed on to portray the antihero Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
The upcoming superhero film stars House of the Dragon actress Milly Alcock in the titular role as Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl.
This will be the second film in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DC Universe, following the highly anticipated Superman: Legacy, which stars David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.
Craig Gillespie is directing the movie, with Matthias Schoenaerts playing the villain Krem of the Yellow Hill and Eve Ridley portraying Ruthye Mary Knolle. Ana Nogueira (The Vampire Diaries) has penned the screenplay, adapting the celebrated DC Comics series by Tom King and Bilquis Evely.
Momoa’s Passion for Lobo
Momoa confirmed the news of his casting via Instagram, where he shared a quote from a past interview with Fandango. During the Aquaman 2 press tour, Momoa had expressed his longtime admiration for Lobo, a character famous for his violent and irreverent persona.
“I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but he was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role,’” he said in the interview.
“I mean, listen. If they call and ask me to play him, it’s a fuck yeah. I haven’t received that call, so I don’t want to put any fake news out there, but if they ever call me and ask me to play, or ask me to audition, I’m there.”
Momoa captioned his Instagram post simply: “They called.”
Supergirl Takes Shape
Production on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is scheduled to begin on January 13, 2025, with the film slated to hit theaters on June 26, 2026.
While plot specifics are being kept under wraps, James Gunn has teased that this iteration of Supergirl will have a darker, more intense tone than previous portrayals of the character, who is Superman’s cousin.
Gunn explained the premise last year while revealing the first 10 film and TV projects in the new DC Universe.
“We see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he’s an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock chip off of Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life,” he shared.
Release and Expectations
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow promises to be a bold step in the evolving DC cinematic space.
With Momoa stepping into the role of Lobo, Milly Alcock taking the reins as Supergirl, and a fresh creative team at the helm, fans can look forward to a thrilling and gritty reimagining of the DC Universe.
