The skies become far more perilous with Mark Wahlberg in the pilot seat as a balding, unhinged hitman.
That’s the core of the new trailer for Flight Risk, a tense thriller directed by Mel Gibson. Shifting his focus from the sweeping battlefields of Scotland (Braveheart) and the Pacific Theater (Hacksaw Ridge), Gibson now delivers an intense in-flight showdown.
Wahlberg portrays a psychotic killer intent on fulfilling a deadly contract, while Michelle Dockery stars as an FBI agent tasked with protecting a government witness, played by Topher Grace. The small plane they’re aboard charts a dangerous course over the remote Alaskan wilderness, setting the stage for high-stakes confrontation.
Wahlberg appears to relish the role of the follically challenged assassin, which marks a significant departure from his usual heroic persona.
Similarly, Dockery, celebrated for her aristocratic performance on Downton Abbey, takes on an atypical role as a gritty law enforcement officer. The film, penned by Jared Rosenberg, is slated for release by Lionsgate on January 24.
Recent Collaborations and Careers
This isn’t the first time Wahlberg and Gibson have worked together. They previously joined forces on Father Stu, a faith-based drama released in 2022.
Gibson, whose once A-list career has faced setbacks due to off-screen controversies, has not directed a film since Hacksaw Ridge in 2016, a project that earned him an Oscar nomination.
His previous directorial works include the Academy Award-winning Braveheart, as well as Apocalypto and The Passion of the Christ. Gibson is reportedly planning a sequel to the latter religious epic.
Cast Highlights
Wahlberg’s most recent performance was in Netflix’s The Union, a spy comedy co-starring Halle Berry. Dockery, meanwhile, appeared in Here, sharing the screen with Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. As for Topher Grace, he recently earned praise for his role in the horror film Heretic.
With Gibson at the helm, Flight Risk combines these diverse talents into what promises to be a nail-biting thriller.
