Nick Mohammed’s recent announcement has sparked excitement among Ted Lasso fans, fueling speculation about the show’s future.
The actor and comedian, best known for playing Nathan Shelley on the hit Apple TV+ series, revealed in an Instagram post on Thursday, Jan. 16, that he had to reschedule dates for his live comedy show Show Pony due to an upcoming filming commitment. Fans quickly speculated that the project might be linked to Ted Lasso.
“I know there’ll be a lot of speculation as to why we moved these dates — you know, what is it for?” Mohammed said in his video post. “I’ll be honest: it is for some filming that I’ve not been able to shift for love [not] money. I cannot say what that filming is, but it will be announced shortly.”
Fans were particularly intrigued when Mohammed hashtagged “Ted Lasso” in the post’s caption and briefly held up a hand-painted “Believe” sign — a clear nod to the iconic sign associated with Ted Lasso, the series’ titular character.
“In the meantime, I would really appreciate it if people didn’t speculate as to what they think [the project] might be,” Mohammed said, holding up the “Believe” sign in jest. “Alright? Okay? Because the last thing I want is for people to be going mad.”
Naturally, the playful tease prompted a wave of speculation. One fan commented, “’Please don’t speculate’ Holds Believe sign and includes #tedlasso in the caption.” Another wrote, “Peep the Believe sign though,” while a third exclaimed, “Do NOT tease like this!!!!.”
The conversation even made its way to Today on Tuesday, Jan. 21, where co-host Savannah Guthrie suggested Mohammed could be filming a Ted Lasso-themed Super Bowl commercial.
Is Ted Lasso Returning for Season 4?
Rumors of a potential fourth season of Ted Lasso have been swirling since August 2024. At that time, PEOPLE confirmed the possibility of the show’s return, with Warner Bros. Television securing new options for several British cast members, including Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca Walton), Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent), and Jeremy Swift (Leslie Higgins). These contracts fall under the United Kingdom acting union Equity.
However, negotiations were still ongoing for American cast members represented by SAG-AFTRA, including Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso), Juno Temple (Keeley Jones), and Brendan Hunt (Coach Beard). Hunt, who also serves as the show’s co-creator and executive producer, remains integral to the series’ development.
The original plan for Ted Lasso was to conclude after three seasons, as Sudeikis himself said ahead of season 3 that it marked “the end of this story we wanted to tell.” But co-creator Bill Lawrence hinted at the possibility of more seasons during an interview with Collider.
“Whatever Jason feels like doing and whatever his decision is, we’re all down with it,” Lawrence said in August 2024. “Not only is he the star, he’s the head writer, and he’s also the dude whose life just has to be completely overhauled and moved to a foreign country with young children. It’s a big deal.”
A Legacy Worth Continuing
Since its debut, Ted Lasso has become a cultural phenomenon, earning numerous accolades, including multiple Emmy Awards. The series follows American college football coach Ted Lasso (played by Sudeikis) as he takes on the daunting task of managing AFC Richmond, a struggling English Premier League soccer team. Its heartwarming humor, emotional depth, and relatable characters have made it a fan favorite worldwide.
For now, all three seasons of Ted Lasso are available to stream on Apple TV+, leaving fans eagerly waiting for updates about the show’s potential continuation. Whether Mohammed’s mysterious project turns out to be related to Ted Lasso or something entirely different, one thing is certain: the show’s loyal fanbase isn’t ready to say goodbye just yet.
