Babak Anvari is set to direct a new sequel to Cloverfield, which is reportedly a direct continuation of Matt Reeves’ original 2008 found-footage thriller.
During the SXSW premiere of his latest film, Hallow Road, Anvari spoke about the upcoming Cloverfield sequel but remained tight-lipped about any details.
“So sad that I cannot because everyone on that team is very secretive, which I understand,” Anvari told Countdown City Geeks. “But whatever happens, just know that hopefully you’re going to get something amazing.”
While he didn’t reveal any specifics, Anvari made it clear that his enthusiasm for the project is “high.”
Creative Team & Production
Back in December 2022, it was reported that Anvari was attached to direct the new Cloverfield film, with Joe Barton writing the script.

Babak Anvari To Direct The Cloverfield Sequel
The movie will be produced by J.J. Abrams through Bad Robot, alongside Hannah Minghella and Jon Cohen. Additionally, Bryan Burk, Matt Reeves, and Drew Goddard are on board as executive producers.
The Legacy of Cloverfield
The 2008 original, directed by Matt Reeves, is a found-footage horror film that follows six people desperately fleeing a monster attack in New York City. The movie starred Michael Stahl-David, Odette Yustman, Mike Vogel, Jessica Lucas, T.J. Miller, Lizzy Caplan, Ben Feldman, and more.
Since its release, Cloverfield has expanded into a multi-film universe, inspiring:
- 2016’s 10 Cloverfield Lane – A psychological thriller set in an underground bunker.
- 2018’s The Cloverfield Paradox – A sci-fi horror film set in space.
The franchise also spawned a manga graphic novel, Cloverfield/Kishin, which follows two students seeking shelter before the Chuai incident, a key event referenced in the film’s viral marketing campaign.
With Anvari at the helm, fans eagerly await what’s next for the Cloverfield universe.
