We’ve now moved past the halfway mark of March, which means we’re just a few months away from Microsoft closing out the first half of the year with another major Xbox release.
February brought us Avowed, April has South of Midnight, and then in May, Xbox is tackling the heavyweight of first-person shooters—DOOM: The Dark Ages.
With the acquisitions of Bethesda and Activision Blizzard, Xbox now holds some of the biggest FPS franchises in gaming history.
We’re eager to see how they handle DOOM, a series with an enormous legacy. First came Halo, then Call of Duty, but taking charge of id Software’s iconic shooter is a massive responsibility.
“We’re just really happy with the decision”
Of course, we’re not oblivious to the fact that Call of Duty is the dominant seller in today’s market and likely plays a much bigger role in Xbox’s financial strategy moving forward.
However, DOOM is foundational to the FPS genre, and bringing the franchise fully under the Xbox umbrella is a huge moment.

DOOM The Dark Ages
While Bethesda and id Software have been leading the charge on The Dark Ages for a while, the significance of DOOM as a first-party Xbox title cannot be overstated—even if the PlayStation 5 is still in the mix.
Reflecting on the series’ recent history, id Software has been on a hot streak for the past decade.
Believe it or not, it’s been almost 10 years since the DOOM reboot (sorry if that makes you feel old), and with both that game and DOOM Eternal, the franchise has experienced a phenomenal resurgence. DOOM Eternal, in particular, was a standout—one of the finest FPS games in recent years.
Looking ahead to The Dark Ages, Xbox now has the opportunity to leave its mark on another legendary FPS, with the game set to launch in less than two months.
While there have been some debates around recent Halo and Call of Duty releases, we believe the teams have done a solid job overall—and we’re hoping they can deliver another hit when DOOM: The Dark Ages arrives on May 15th.
