Less than a month after securing director Kitao Sakurai, Sony has removed Legendary’s planned Street Fighter adaptation from its release schedule.
At the same time, the studio has rescheduled Tommy Wirkola’s upcoming shark thriller, originally titled Beneath the Storm.
The film, now renamed Shiver, has been pushed from August 2025 to July 3, 2026, positioning it as a key summer blockbuster.
Uncertain Future for Street Fighter
Emmy nominee Kitao Sakurai was officially announced as the director for Street Fighter in February 2025.
While its future remains unclear, should the project be rescheduled, it will still be co-developed and co-produced with Capcom, the video game giant behind the long-running fighting game franchise.
The last live-action adaptation of Street Fighter hit theaters in 1994, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ming-Na Wen, and Raul Julia.
While the film was commercially successful, it was panned by critics—though Julia’s performance, which turned out to be his final role, was widely praised by both fans and reviewers.
Wirkola’s Shiver Takes Shape
Shiver (formerly Beneath the Storm) will star Phoebe Dynevor, with Whitney Peak and Djimon Hounsou also in the cast. While plot details remain under wraps, it is understood that sharks play a central role in the story.
The film is written and directed by Tommy Wirkola, with Adam McKay and Kevin Messick producing under their Hyperobject Industries banner.
Wirkola is best known for his instant classic 2022 holiday action film, Violent Night, in which David Harbour played a Santa Claus action hero in a Die Hard-style storyline.
