Build a Smart Coffee Maker

Buying smart devices has been a hobby for some time, driven both by curiosity about their workings and the genuine usefulness they sometimes offer when properly handled.

One major challenge with most smart gadgets, however, remains the high cost associated with setting up a functional smart home. Thankfully, by applying a little bit of do-it-yourself creativity, it becomes possible to save a considerable amount of money.

The idea of creating cheaper versions of Philips Hue LED strips was discussed. After that success, the thought arose: could intelligence be added to even the simplest of home devices, like a regular coffee machine?

Initially, TP-Link HS100 smart plugs were purchased due to their affordable price and easy integration with Google Home. However, their large size and unattractive appearance led to the search for a better alternative that could be neatly built into devices.

A suggestion came from a friend to try a very small and extremely affordable internet switch known as Sonoff. This device allows for direct wiring without needing external adapters or extensive modification, making it ideal for concealing smart features inside traditional appliances.

The choice was made to experiment on a bright yellow Moccamaster coffee maker, a simple device without any built-in technology. Its basic wiring and spacious interior made it a suitable candidate for embedding the Sonoff discreetly.

After about an hour of cabling and assembly, the setup became operational. Now, by saying “Hey Google, turn on the coffee machine,” it activates without lifting a finger. Even better, integration with Android Pie’s clock app enables the morning alarm to automatically power the coffee machine.

Before heading to bed, filling the Moccamaster with water and coffee grounds is the only preparation needed. By morning, the machine is ready to brew without needing any additional interaction, achieving convenience without the expense of overpriced, DRM-limited coffee makers.

A full guide to building an internet-connected coffee machine that consistently delivers excellent coffee without breaking the bank is provided below.

Readers are advised to proceed carefully. This project carries risks, including the possibility of damaging the coffee machine or causing injury. It is important to take time, follow instructions closely, and carry out proper research before beginning.

Getting Ready

The following items will be necessary to set up an internet-controlled coffee machine:

  • A Moccamaster to disassemble
  • A computer screwdriver set with both flathead and Phillips options
  • 20-30cm of additional power wiring for connecting the Sonoff
  • Around an hour of free time

The Moccamaster’s simplicity—taking water and ground coffee to produce exceptional results—makes it perfect for this modification. Introducing a Sonoff opens up the possibility of having a coffee maker start brewing with an alarm clock.

Before getting started, note that Sonoff devices typically require a 2.4GHz WiFi connection. Ensure the router supports this frequency.

How to Put a Coffee Maker Online

Opening up the bottom of the Moccamaster reveals that there is ample room inside, making this project manageable within an hour. From the outside, it remains virtually impossible to tell that any smart components have been added.

The first step involves unplugging the machine from power, removing all plastic components, and shaking out any remaining water from the heating element over a sink. The machine should then be flipped over while remaining unplugged.

Only four screws need to be removed to lift the base and access the internal electronics.

Inside, the simplicity of the machine’s design is immediately apparent. Conveniently, a junction box at the entry point of the power cord simplifies the task of splicing in the Sonoff. The quality construction explains why Moccamaster machines are known for their durability.

Before tampering with any wiring, taking a photo of the original setup is highly recommended. This ensures easy reference if any confusion arises later.

Next, the center screw at the cable terminal should be loosened to free it. The power cable should be pulled slightly inward to create additional slack, which will help with fitting the Sonoff away from the heating elements.

It is important to verify the colour codes of the wires according to local standards. In this instance, a European-made Moccamaster is wired to a Dutch plug, similar to most European appliances, although there may be slight variations elsewhere.

The neutral wire from the input side of the junction box (marked ‘N’) needs to be detached and inserted into the corresponding input port on the Sonoff. Care must be taken to insert it into the correct side to prevent damage.

Similarly, the live (positive) wire should be connected into the L1 port of the Sonoff, ensuring a tight fit. Capped wires can make insertion difficult, but applying gentle pressure with a screwdriver can assist.

Next, an extra piece of wire should be prepared by stripping a few millimetres off each end, then connecting them to the output side of the Sonoff. The neutral wire should return to the N port and the live wire back to L1 on the junction box.

Once the connections are confirmed to be correct, all screws should be tightly fastened, ensuring none of the wires can be easily pulled out. A visual comparison with a reference picture may assist in verifying the setup.

Routing the newly added wiring carefully around the copper tube at the back—where no switches are located—is advisable. The Sonoff can then be tucked neatly between the two major components.

To secure the Sonoff without damaging the coffee maker, blu-tack or sticky tape can be used instead of screws. The power cable brace and junction box should also be re-secured, ensuring that no wires come into contact with heating elements.

It’s Alive!

The next step is to test the setup. With the machine’s power switch off and the base still open, the plug should be inserted into an overload-protected power strip to check if the Sonoff lights up.

Before reassembling the base, it is important to complete the Sonoff pairing process by holding its button for five seconds and setting it up using the Sonoff app. It might take several attempts before pairing successfully.

Internet-Connected Experiments

The Sonoff switch provides one of the cheapest options for devices compatible with Google Home and Alexa, achieving the goal of enabling voice-activated coffee brewing alongside a morning alarm.

Performance has been impressive considering the price: Google Assistant immediately recognised the switch and activated the coffee maker right on cue with the alarm. Waking up to the aroma of fresh coffee added a pleasant start to the day.

Once installed, many additional automations become possible, including setting up routines like “coming home” or using voice commands to activate the coffee machine.

However, concerns remain regarding the Sonoff firmware. Although the app is rarely used after the initial setup, it is poorly designed, and there are doubts about the switch’s behaviour on the network.

Solutions exist for those worried about privacy, such as flashing custom firmware onto the device. In this project, the Sonoff has been isolated on a hidden network to avoid exposing private data.

Efforts continue towards finding better methods of enhancing smart home systems, including experimenting with Xiaomi Home Hub devices to achieve better integration. Suggestions for other DIY-connected devices are welcome in the comments.
