What is ChromeOS Flex, and why should it be considered?

A free operating system called ChromeOS Flex can be installed on many ageing computers, including several Mac models like the 2014 Mac Mini. An official list of approved models is available online, and checking it beforehand is essential to avoid rendering the computer unusable. This list equally provides information on the length of support your device will receive.

Choosing to install ChromeOS Flex allows an old laptop to handle Chrome and web-based applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and cloud storage access. Devices can also be accessed remotely using Chrome Remote Desktop if multiple PCs are in use.

ChromeOS does not require an extremely powerful processor, and thanks to its reliance on constant internet connectivity, it ensures security updates are delivered regularly while the device remains supported.

While most new Chromebooks can use Android apps, ChromeOS Flex does not offer this compatibility. Those dependent on heavy-duty desktop applications, such as professional video editing software, would be better served exploring other laptop options detailed in expert laptop reviews.

Running ChromeOS Flex from a USB stick is possible to test its performance before full installation. However, experience shows that this method often results in extremely sluggish operation, and during one trial, a MacBook Air even restarted unexpectedly.

Installing ChromeOS Flex will erase all existing data on the laptop, and recovery would not be possible afterward. It is strongly advised to back up all crucial files before beginning, either to a recommended external hard drive or cloud storage.

ChromeOS Flex can be downloaded without cost directly from Google’s official website.

Install ChromeOS Flex in 6 easy steps

Before starting the installation, it is important to have a USB stick with a minimum of 8GB storage, keeping in mind that the process will erase all existing data on it.

For those without a USB stick available, recommendations for the best USB sticks are readily available.

1. Open the Chrome web browser

Those not currently using Chrome might be browsing with Edge or Firefox. For installation, visit chrome.google.com and select Download Chrome.

The website will automatically detect your computer’s system and suggest the correct version, whether Linux, macOS, or Windows. Open the downloaded file and install Chrome. Afterward, a browser extension will need to be added.

2. Install the Chrome extension

Once Chrome is running, visit the extension page, search for Chromebook Recovery Utility, and add it to Chrome by selecting the Add to Chrome button followed by Add Extension.

Locate the Extensions menu in the top-right corner (symbolised by a jigsaw icon), and click on Chromebook Recovery Utility.

3. Plug in your USB

Insert the USB stick (minimum 8GB) into one of the computer’s USB ports. Once it is recognised, click Get Started within the Recovery Utility window.

4. Choose your Chromebook model

A window asking for the Chromebook model will appear. Select the option to choose from a list, pick Google ChromeOS Flex at the top, and ChromeOS Flex at the bottom. Continue to the next step by clicking Continue.

5. Write ChromeOS Flex to your USB

In the following window, pick the USB drive from the available list and press Continue. Advanced settings can be ignored.

Click Create Now and confirm with Yes when prompted for permission to allow changes to the device. The process of installing ChromeOS Flex to the USB stick will commence. Installation can be time-consuming; it took over 35 minutes during testing. Upon completion, click OK.

6. Install ChromeOS Flex on your computer

Insert the USB stick into the laptop intended for installation, then power it on while pressing the appropriate boot key.

Below is a quick reminder of boot keys for common laptop brands:

Laptop brand Boot key
Acer F2
Apple Hold Option
Asus Del
Dell F12
Gateway F1
HP F9
Intel F2

Select the USB drive from the boot options or adjust the BIOS settings to prioritise USB booting. Seeing the ChromeOS Flex logo confirms successful booting. Click Get Started and decide whether to run it temporarily from USB or to install permanently. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen.

During setup, the laptop will request the wi-fi password and present privacy and licensing agreements. After this, the installation process concludes.

Those interested in efficient digital storage options can consult guides highlighting the best USB sticks and external hard drives.

Using ChromeOS Flex

Once ChromeOS Flex has been installed, it can synchronize with Android phones, but not with iPhones. Notifications from the phone will appear on the laptop, and data such as wi-fi passwords can be shared between devices.

Passwords and bookmarks previously saved in Chrome will automatically transfer over. This process also applies to iPhone users, provided a Google account is being used and signed in.

Applications used frequently can be pinned to the taskbar located at the bottom of the screen. This bar operates similarly to the Windows taskbar, offering a menu on the left resembling the Windows Start menu and a notification area on the right displaying the date, time, network status, and battery level.

Compared to Windows or macOS, ChromeOS may feel quite basic, with the web browser being its central feature. However, users can still multitask by snapping windows side-by-side, conducting video calls, and scrolling through content using two-finger gestures, maintaining a familiar laptop experience.

This minimalistic design enables ChromeOS Flex to operate efficiently on computers that would struggle under more demanding operating systems like the latest versions of Windows.

Using an old laptop to run ChromeOS Flex extends its life and reduces the quantity of electrical waste produced annually in the UK. It also prevents unnecessary spending on a new machine.
