Dawn Robinson, a founding member of a successful ’90s singing group, was once part of the pop music soundtrack of the decade—but her life has taken an unexpected turn.
In a video posted to her YouTube channel on Tuesday, the former En Vogue member—known for hits like “My Lovin’” and “Hold On”—revealed that difficult circumstances have led her to live in her car.
Robinson shared that she had planned to disclose this part of her life when she first started her channel, though some advised her against it.
“You shouldn’t talk about it because you’re a celebrity, and what if they judge you?” she recalled people telling her.
Her response? “I’m like, okay, and what if? What if they judge me? So what? We’re all judged. Life is life.”
After taking a few deep breaths, she made her revelation. “For the past three—almost three years—I have been living in my car,” she admitted before squealing, “I said it. Oh my God, it’s out!”
Robinson explained that in 2020, she had been living with her parents in Las Vegas, which was “wonderful until it wasn’t.”

When that situation changed, she found herself living in her car for a month before her co-manager invited her to stay with him in Los Angeles.
“He said, ‘I don’t have a lot of room, but I’ll make room for you,’” Robinson recalled. “But then when I got to his place, he actually didn’t have room for me.”
As a result, she stayed in a hotel for eight months but struggled to secure an apartment. During this time, Robinson began researching “car life” and discovered a community of people who choose to live in their vehicles.
She described how, once she adjusted to her new living situation in 2022, she began to feel a sense of liberation.
“I felt free. I felt like I was on a camping trip,” she said. Robinson made it clear that she wasn’t sharing her story for sympathy but rather to inspire others through her resilience.
“It’s not ‘woe is me,’” she emphasized. “I’m learning about who I am. I’m learning myself as a person, as a woman.”
She plans to continue documenting her journey, calling it an “adventure” and an “unexpected path that I’ve enjoyed quite a bit.”
