“Blood Red Sky”: A Somber Tale of a Mother’s Love and Vampirism On a Plane

A Still From Blood Red Sky 2021 Movie (Via IMDB)

“Blood Red Sky” is a 2021 German-British co-production that combines horror, action, and thriller genres, directed by Peter Thorwarth. The movie tells the story of Nadja, a woman infected with vampirism, who is determined to protect her son and preserve her humanity while fighting off feral vampires on a transatlantic flight. The movie became Netflix’s most-watched German program ever, with over 50M global views in less than a month.

Thorwarth, the director, and co-writer of the movie, had nursed the idea for almost 20 years. He wanted to create a horror movie with a bond between a mother and her child taking precedence. The original tone was modeled after “From Dusk Till Dawn,” but as Thorwarth got older and became a father, he thought the story needed more depth.

The movie takes a somber tone, different from what the conceit might suggest. It’s a slow-burn psychological thriller that turns into a gruesome bloodbath, grounded by a mother’s love for her son. The performances, particularly Peri Baumeister’s as Nadja, make the movie stand out, giving it a human heart in an unreal world.

The movie takes inspiration from Jodie Foster’s “Flightplan,” using a similar structure of a mother fighting against adversity on a plane. However, “Blood Red Sky” takes it up a notch by adding vampires to the mix.

“Blood Red Sky” is a horror-action-thriller hybrid that combines a mother’s love, vampirism, and a plane full of hijackers. It’s a movie that rejects satire and takes a more serious tone, making it stand out among other vampire movies. The movie is available to stream on Netflix, and it’s worth watching for its intense character dynamics and tragic foundation.
