The Legacy of Rhaenys and Meraxes in House of the Dragon

As the prequel to the iconic Game of Thrones series, House of the Dragon has sparked massive interest among fans worldwide. The show’s latest season premiere, “A Son for a Son,” has left audiences in awe, and for good reason. One of the most pivotal aspects of the show is the iconic dragons, particularly Meraxes, the dragon ridden by Queen Rhaenys, the third child of King Aegon the Conqueror. With a rich history dating back centuries, Meraxes has become an integral part of Westeros’ mythology.

In the early days of Aegon’s conquest, Rhaenys and Meraxes campaigned south of the landing site, subduing local lords and eventually accompanying Aegon’s trusted advisor, Orys Baratheon, against the Storm King Argilac of House Durrandon. Meraxes proved herself as a formidable force on the battlefield, and her partnership with Rhaenys cemented their bond.

However, the Dornish refused to surrender, leading to four years of war. Meraxes played a crucial role in the conflict, leading the initial assault on Sunspear. Though the Dornish defeated the Targaryen forces, the Scorpions proved to be a game-changer. In a tragic turn of events, Meraxes was shot through the eye by one of these massive ballistae, leaving her rider and herself to crash to the ground.

This harrowing moment has a lasting impact on the series. “A Son for a Son” shows the Red Keep fitted with Scorpions, a testament to the lessons learned from Meraxes’ demise. This strategic decision would prove instrumental in upcoming battles.

As the Dance of the Dragons approaches, the Targaryen dragons are under threat. The Scorpions, once a symbol of resistance, have become a potent reminder of the fragility of even the mightiest creatures. The symbolism is striking, as Meraxes’ skull now adorns the Red Keep, serving as a grim reminder that even adult dragons can be killed. The impending Dance of the Dragons will see the most draconic and Valyrian blood spilled since the Doom of Valyria.

For Rhaenyra, Meraxes’ skull serves as a poignant reminder of the bloodshed to come. As the war escalates, the once-majestic dragons will become mere set dressing, their skulls mounting up alongside Meraxes’. The show’s narrative is set to unfold, with politics and battles taking center stage.

House of the Dragon Season 2 is now available to stream on Max in the U.S.
