Stopmotion is a new horror film that delves into the theme of obsession and psychological torment, blending live-action and stop-motion animation to create a haunting and unsettling experience. At the center of the film is Ella Blake, a protagonist whose life is slowly consumed by her own fears and addictions, threatening to erase her sense of self. Her fixation is fueled by her experiences as an animator, working tirelessly for her demanding mother, Suzanne, a stop-motion artist struggling with arthritis.

When Suzanne suffers a stroke, Ella is thrust into a new reality, and despite her mother’s hospitalization, she becomes more obsessed with completing her mother’s unfinished film. This obsession takes an unexpected turn with the appearance of a mysterious girl, who tasks Ella with creating a new film about a girl who finds refuge in a house to escape the ominous Ashman, a lumbering figure formed from ash, representing death. As Ella delves deeper into the film, she becomes increasingly consumed by her own fears and anxieties, leading to a descent into madness.

The film relies on terrifying animation, using dark and eerie stop-motion sequences to convey Ella’s unraveling mental state. The use of mortician’s wax to create a doll is particularly unsettling, symbolizing Ella’s loss of identity and her desperate attempt to regain control. The film’s innovative use of stop-motion animation serves as a means to explore Ella’s mental state, taking the viewer on a journey inside her mind as she struggles to cope with grief and abandonment.

As Ella’s mental state deteriorates, the lines between reality and fantasy become increasingly blurred, leaving the viewer questioning what is real and what is simply a product of Ella’s warped mind. Stopmotion digs deeper into Ella’s psychological breakdown, examining the symbolism behind her descent into madness and the consequences of her all-consuming obsession. The film’s climax is intense and unsettling, as Ella’s psyche unravels and she becomes consumed by her own fears and the Ashman.

Stopmotion is a thought-provoking and chilling film that explores the darker side of obsession and the devastating effects of neglecting emotional and mental well-being, making it a standout in the horror genre.
