The Penguin Takes Center Stage in Matt Reeves’ Expanding BatVerse

Matt Reeves, the creative force behind The Batman, is expanding his BatVerse with a new series centered around Oswald Cobblepot, also known as The Penguin. This upcoming show will be the first spin-off from The Batman, going deeper into Cobblepot’s transformation from a disfigured nobody to a notorious Gotham gangster. With The Batman’s success, Reeves has been steadily building his own corner of the DC universe, exploring interconnected projects based on characters from Batman’s rogues gallery.

The Penguin series will pick up where The Batman left off, with Gotham still reeling from the flood caused by the Riddler’s grand plan. With Carmine Falcone gone, the power structure in the city is shifting, and The Penguin sees an opportunity to take control of the criminal underworld. Colin Farrell, who impressed audiences with his unrecognizable performance as The Penguin in The Batman, will reprise his role in the series.

The show is being described as a Scarface-like tale, where Farrell’s Cobblepot makes a power play to rise to the top of the crime world in this new Gotham. The series will follow Cobblepot as he navigates the streets of Gotham, facing extraordinary obstacles as he tries to rise to power. Lauren LeFranc, the showrunner, has written all the episodes, and Craig Zobel will direct the first two episodes. The cast includes Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, the daughter of Carmine Falcone, who will be in direct conflict with The Penguin over control of Gotham.

Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Deirdre O’Connell have also joined the cast, and Clancy Brown has been announced as the latest addition to the ensemble. Matt Reeves will executive produce the series alongside his production partner Dylan Clark, who also produced The Batman. With The Penguin, Reeves and his team aim to take a deep look into the character of Penguin and the criminal underbelly of Gotham, something that the time constraints of a movie don’t allow. The success of The Batman has laid the groundwork for this new series, and fans are eagerly awaiting the release of The Penguin, which is scheduled to premiere this September.
