Disney Cancels John Stamos’ Sports Comedy-Drama Big Shot After Two Seasons Despite Positive Reviews

Disney Plus has made the difficult decision to cancel its sports comedy-drama series Big Shot, starring John Stamos, after two seasons. Despite receiving positive reviews and praise for its diverse female cast, the show ultimately failed to gain significant viewership, leading to its demise. The series, co-created by David E. Kelley, Dean Lorey, and Brad Garrett, followed a temperamental basketball coach named Marvyn Korn who relocates to California to coach a girls’ basketball team at Westbrook School after being fired from his job at the University of Wisconsin.

Big Shot received positive reviews, with a critical rating of 78 percent and an audience score of 81 percent. However, these endorsements were not enough to sustain the series. The second season, which dropped in October, saw the impact of budget cuts, with the show being released in a binge-watching format rather than the traditional weekly format. This change may have affected the show’s ability to attract and retain viewers.

The series boasted a talented cast, including Sophia Mitri Schloss, Richard Robichaux, Nell Verlaque, Tiana Le, Tisha Eve Custodio, Cricket Wampler, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Jessalyn Gilsig, among others. Yvette Nicole Brown’s performance earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Streaming Series at the Hollywood Critics Association Television Awards. Despite this recognition, the show ultimately failed to resonate with audiences.

It’s surprising that Big Shot was canceled, given its positive reviews and the fact that it was released during the peak of Disney+’s popularity. However, with the vast array of content available on the streamer, it appears that Big Shot simply got lost in the shuffle. All two seasons of Big Shot are still available to stream on Disney+, allowing viewers to catch up on the series before it fades away. Despite its cancellation, Big Shot remains a commendable effort, showcasing the talents of its diverse cast and the creativity of its writers. With its cancellation, Disney+ continues to evolve its content, giving viewers a wide range of options to choose from.
