The new season of Justified: City Primeval has finally come to a close, wrapping up the story of Raylan Givens and his fellow characters in a satisfying and unexpected way.

According to Andron, the decision to bring back Walton Goggins as Boyd Crowder was a surprise, but one that worked out well. “We did it just to have a good time, and it was a thrill for us, and I think it was a thrill for the audience.”

Dinner added that bringing in Goggins was a way to misdirect the audience and subvert expectations. “You see him and you’re like, ‘Okay, he’s clearly gonna be a part of this thing.’ And then, you do the fun flip where he’s actually the patsy.”

The creators also discussed the ending of the season, which they feel is a satisfying conclusion to Raylan’s story. Andron noted that they had to be careful about adapting the ending from the original book, as it’s a complex and nuanced tale. Dinner added that they had to be mindful of the story and the characters, making sure that the ending felt organic and true to the series.

As for the possibility of another season, Andron is hopeful but cautious. “There are two things to it. I know FX measures whether they wanna continue something with, do they like it? Do the critics respond to it? Do people watch it? I feel like those boxes are probably checked. So then, it’s really about the willingness of the creatives to get back in there and do more, and coming up with the right story.”

Dinner added that the creators would only return if they have a compelling story to tell. “We certainly would not do it out of fear. I don’t think that’s a good reason to do something, or not do something.”

The future of Justified: City Primeval remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the creators have put their heart and soul into the show, and it shows in every episode.
