Fast & Furious writer Chris Morgan has responded to Christopher Nolan’s comments expressing his admiration for Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift.
In 2020, during an appearance on Josh Horowitz’s HappySadConfused podcast, Nolan revealed his “soft spot” for Tokyo Drift. He praised director Justin Lin’s contributions to the franchise, noting how the films “got crazier and bigger and crazier and bigger” but still retained a sense of fun.
Now, in a new interview, Morgan reflected on Nolan’s remarks about the standalone sequel to 2001’s The Fast and the Furious.
When asked if Nolan’s comments had surprised him, Morgan replied, “How could it not? He is literally one of the greatest filmmakers in the history of humanity, and he likes my movie.”
Morgan went on to share some behind-the-scenes details about the project. “By the way, I’ve spoken to him about it since then,” he revealed.
“That movie was an open writing assignment, and I pitched, ‘They’re doing a thing in Tokyo called drifting. Here’s what it is, and here’s how the movie could go.’
But I didn’t get the job at first because I didn’t realize that the studio mandate at the time was to do a $10 million straight-to-DVD movie in Los Angeles.
The movie I pitched was more expensive, but they ultimately called me back. So we talked it through, and we got a chance to do it.”
